Programs

Story of a Butterfly
Preschoolers become involved in the butterfly life cycle. Puppet-model caterpillars present metamorphosis. Students "grow" a butterfly of puzzle pieces. A five minute video will lead the students to the Tropical Conservatory to find examples of five senses, living and
non-living, and colors on the tropical butterflies.
Grade: PK
Time: 1 hour
Limit: 35 students

Tiny Worldz ......................................
Explore the world of insects from the outside to the inside. Students will observe and compare insect structures and behaviors through hands-on experience at a variety of stations. Living insects are observed throughout the program.
Grade: K-2
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 2 classrooms or 40 children

Adventures in a Butterfly Garden.......
Construct an understanding of what flowers and butterflies have in common: poliination. Sequence life stages of the butterflies and plants and learn how the two interact. Apply the new-found knowledge by creating a one-of-a-kind pollinator.
Grade: K-2
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students

Hide a Butterfly
How do butterflies hide from predators? Children begin to distinguish between plant and animal structures and behaviors through this dramatic play program. Learn about camouflage while interactively helping "butterflies" hide from "birds". Visit the Tropical Conservatory to experience living and hidden butterflies.
Grade: K–1
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students

Take a Walk with Butterflies ................
Learn the butterfly's physical structure and function with the guidance of semantic maps, the film The Butterfly Effect, and hands-on materials. Use the Tropical Conservatory as a living laboratory for observations and data collection.
Grade: 1 & 2
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students

Wings of Wonder
Observation skills are put to the test with samples of lepidopteran eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Simple investigations are conducted to take an extensive look at butterfly behaviors and data collection.
Grade: K–3
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students

Living the Butterfly Life
Study organisms in an unique environment. Students use living insects to compare and contrast complete and incomplete metamorphosis. The Butterfly Effect is used to discuss the life cycles, protective behaviors and coloration of butterflies. Students will then identify specific butterflies with a dichotomous key and collect data on butterfly biology.
Grade: 3–5
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students

Insect Ecology ................................
Students will work with many insects to identify specialized structures and senses, and describe how they help animals survive their environments.
Grade: 3-6
Time: 1½ hours
Limit: 60 students
